[URGENT - ALL STUDENTS] Linking courses

Dear Students,

Here is an announcement from the Rector’s Office:

All regular Students (not only psychology Students, but all Students at the whole University) need to link courses from the winter semester 2013/14 in USOSweb. Courses need to be linked to:

  • a concrete program (eg. psychology) and to the study term (eg. winter semester 2013/14)
  • or only at least to the program (eg. psychology).

For a course from the 2013/14 academic year which is not linked anywhere, there will be an additional payment. If you do not link a course, it means that you declare it a course exceeding the limit of extracurricular courses.

For courses from the 2012/13 and from earlier academic years that are not linked anywhere, there will not be any additional payments.

This needs to be done till 08 November, as set by the Rector. It will take just 5 minutes. Older Students already know how to do it, but for new Students and all other Students who need more guidelines, here is an [instruction]. Older Students: you do not have to deliver the program for check-up now. You will be able to do that later when the semester gets to its end. Just link your courses.

This requirement comes from the Rector, so not from the WISP Director, not from the Dean of the Faculty, but from the very top of the University hierarchy and it concerns all UW Faculties.

NOW SOME MORE INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT IT ALL MEANS:

A course is linked to the study program and to the semester: this course will count when checking your courses after the semester to which you linked the course (so a course linked to any semester of the 2013/14 academic year will count into the GPA after the 2013/14 academic year). You have to link all obligatory courses to the semester during which they are taking place. Obligatory is obligatory, there is no choice. However, elective/specialization courses do not have to be linked to the semester during which they are taking place. They could be linked to a later semester. Generally speaking, courses linked to a program and to a specific semester will be included into everything: your GPA, transcripts etc.

A course is linked only to the study program and NOT to a specific semester: by linking the course only to program (and not to a specific semester), you tell us that this course is important for you during your studies, but eg. you have not decided yet to which semester you would like to link it. So for example in the winter semester 2013/14 you have completed an elective 'Key Studies' worth 3 ECTS and you got a grade '3,5'. You don’t know yet if you would like it to be included in the GPA after the 2013/14 year. Let’s say after the whole academic year 2013/14 you have accumulated 65 ECTS. Without Key Studies you will have 62 ECTS, so still enough to complete the year. You may decide not to include Key Studies in any semester of the 2013/14 academic year in order to have a better GPA. Then you will be able to include the course in the 2014/15 academic year if you need ECTS points. You will add it for example to the spring semester 2014/15 and it will count then.

A course that is not linked to any program and semester: there will be an additional payment for this course. If you do not link a course, it means that you declare it a course exceeding the limit of extracurricular courses. Each Student needs 300 ECTS to finish studies. Up to 330 is fine and without consequences or any additional payment. However, there is an additional payment for the 331st and every next ECTS point. Courses not linked anywhere are treated as those exceeding the limit of extracurricular courses, so exceeding the acceptable 330 ECTS.
