Empirical paper and Master thesis

Year 3 - Empirical Paper

During the 3rd year each student is required to conduct his/her own research that will result in writing an empirical paper. The process is supervised by a tutor that was chosen by the student himself (See below: "How to find a tutor"). At the end of spring semester the empirical paper should be submitted to the tutor so it could be graded. The final grade consists of the tutor's and reviewer's grades, averaged and, if necessary, rounded up. Apart from the grade student is granted 6 ECTS for completing this requirement.

Years 4-5 - Master Thesis

During the 4th and 5th year of studies each student prepares a Master Thesis. They defend the thesis during the final defence exam which finishes the studies. Preparing the thesis lasts for 4 semesters. After the first 3 semesters students need to obtain a "pass" (in Polish "zaliczenie") and after the 4th semester they need to receive a grade. This grade reflects how the student worked during the thesis preparation (eg. if they submitted all needed reports, if they worked regularly etc). There is a separate grade for the thesis itself. [Learning outcomes] for the Master Thesis.

After finishing all the courses and preparing the thesis, there is a final defence exam. It is an oral exam during which the student present his/her thesis in front of the commission consisting of 3 members of the Faculty. The presentation should be rather short (around 10 minutes) and there is no need to use any electronic devices/ slideshows. Once it is finished the commission asks questions concerning the Master Thesis. The last part of the defense is drawing two questions concerning the studies and answering one of them (upon student's choice). Questions will come from [this list].

How to find a tutor?

Each student is responsible for finding a tutor for him-/herself according to their interest. The procedure is:
1. Check the Tutor List on the Moodle website. Find a tutor who would best fit the area of your interests.
2. Download the applicable Agreement from the Moodle website.
3. Contact the tutor. Tell them what you would like to write about. If they agree to be your tutor, ask them to sign the Agreement and don't forget to sign it as well.
4. Bring the Agreement to the office. From this moment the cooperation between you and your tutor becomes official.

Year 2 - Theoretical Paper (for the last time in the 2012/13 academic year)

During the 2nd year each student is required to write a theoretical paper. In the 2012/13 academic year this requirement concerns 2nd-year students for the last time. 2nd-year students in the 2013/14 academic year or later will not have to write this paper. The change is connected to the update of the program. After the winter semester students need to obtain a "pass" (in Polish "zaliczenie"), while after the spring semester they need to obtain a grade. The final grade constists of the tutor's and reviewer's grades, averaged and, if necessary, rounded up.
